Shanghai: Expo 2010
"Better City, Better Life"
May 1, 2010 to October 31, 2010
"The theme chosen by the event’s organizers was “Better City, Better Life,” which signified the increasingly important role of urbanization in the 21st century and also highlighted and promoted Shanghai as one of the world’s great metropolises." (Kenneth Pletcher: Encyclopaedia Briticanna)
The Shanghai World's fair was the largest fair to date as it eclipsed the St. Louis World's fair for largest plot of land on 1,300 acres, it set the record for most countries participating at 200, and it set the record for most people attending a world's fair at over 70 million people.

The central point of the fair was directed upon the Expo Axis, which served many different functions including containing infrastructure components. Adjacent to the Expo axis were the 5 main pavilions that housed the themes: "Pavilion of City Being," "Pavilion of Footprint," "Pavilion of Future," "Pavilion of Urban Planet," and "Pavilion of Urbanian". Many countries incorporated biodegradable and sustainable substances into their buildings including Switzerland (below, right) whose exterior included a biodegradable soybean exterior curtain wall and a grass roof. |
